Schumann and Brahms Piano Quartets

Robert Schumann wrote his chamber music pieces intensely for two years after his marriage to Clara in 1840, and his Piano Quartet in E-flat is a sincere celebration for his beloved and life. Johannes Brahms, a very close friend of the Schumanns, wrote his famous Piano Quartet in G minor, 8 years after they first met. For this performance, legendary violinist Charles Castleman hails from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, to join cellist Mark Rudoff and violist Nancy Nehring from the Ohio State University in Columbus, and pianists Peter Miyamoto and Ayako Tsuruta.

Welcome back to the holiday musical celebration à la Odyssey. We are happy to introduce the new Missouri Saxophone Quartet, with returning favorites, harpist Maria Trevor Duhova and the Columbia Handbell Choir - now in its 21st Season, in this delightful evening of mostly French music that includes Dutilleux Sonatine, Koechlin Epitaph of Jean Harlow and Ravel Introduction and Allegro, only to name a few! Bach, Baroque, and Bassoons

In this mostly Baroque program, Rodney Ackmann leads MU Bassoon Ensemble to open the concert, followed by J.S. Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto No. 6 (otherwise known as Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in concerto grosso), featuring flutist Steve Geibel, oboist Dan Willett, Ayako Tsuruta on harpsichord, and Odyssey Chamber Ensemble. R. Paul Crabb concludes the program with the magnificent Bach Collegium Choir in a beautiful, upbeat Bach Cantata BWV 192, “Nun danket.”

There are many stunning contemporary pieces that are rarely performed, and this program is dedicated to present a fraction of those numerous, avant-garde masterpieces. Featured are 20th and 21st century works by mostly American composers - John Cage, Thomas McKenney, Andrew Pape, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Alejandro Viñao and Stephen Whibley - and equally avant-garde performers, percussionists Julia Gaines and Brian Tate, only to name a few.

The Beautiful Baltic

While Russian Sergei Prokofiev is not quite from the Baltic states, his Overture on Hebrew Themes are undoubtedly beautiful, and will be presented masterfully by clarinetist Paul Garritson and pianist Peter Miyamoto will be joined by Esterhazy Quartet, which just celebrated its 41st anniversary last season. Odyssey Chamber Ensemble will depict the depth of featured Baltic compositions, Tabula Rasa by Arvo Pärt and Pelléas and Melisande Suite by Jean Sibelius. Celebrate our Season Finale with our semi-annual post-concert reception!
